Hardwood vs. Softwood Firewood — What's the Difference and Which Should You Buy?

If you've ever ordered firewood and ended up with a pile that burned through in an hour, there's a good chance you got softwood. Most people don't know the difference when they buy — and most sellers don't volunteer it. Here's what you actually need to know.

What Makes Hardwood Different

Hardwood comes from deciduous trees — oak, citrus, avocado, eucalyptus. These trees grow slowly, which means the wood is dense. Dense wood burns hotter, burns longer, and produces far less creosote buildup in your chimney than softwood does.

Here's what that means in practice:

  • Longer burn time — a load of red oak will outlast a load of pine two or three times over

  • Higher heat output — hardwood produces more BTUs per cord, so your fireplace or fire pit actually warms the space

  • Less creosote — the dense, complete combustion of hardwood leaves far less sticky residue in your flue

  • Better coals — hardwood burns down to long-lasting coals, which is what you want for cooking or an overnight fire

What Softwood Is Good For (and What It Isn't)

Softwood — pine, fir, cedar — lights fast and burns hot initially. That makes it genuinely useful as kindling to get a fire started. The problem is it burns out quickly, pops and sparks more than hardwood, and produces significantly more creosote. If you're filling a wood rack for a fireplace or heating your home through a cold stretch, softwood alone will leave you buying twice as much and cleaning your chimney twice as often.

Bottom line: softwood is fine for kindling. For everything else — your fireplace, fire pit, pizza oven, or BBQ — you want hardwood.

Why Southern California Homeowners Should Always Buy Hardwood

SoCal winters are mild — but when you're using a fireplace or outdoor fire pit, you want the fire to actually perform. You're not burning wood for survival; you're burning it for ambiance, for cooking, or for a few hours of real warmth on a cold evening. That context makes wood quality matter even more. A softwood fire that burns out in 45 minutes isn't giving you the experience you paid for.

There's also the air quality angle. Southern California has strict air quality standards — particularly on Spare the Air days. Hardwood burns cleaner with less smoke output than softwood, which matters both for compliance and for your neighbors.

What Firewood Guys Carries

Every cord we sell is locally sourced from the Santa Monica Mountains and Los Padres National Forest. No imported wood, no retail middlemen, no mystery wood from out of state. Here's what we carry:

  • Red Oak — the most popular pick; long-lasting, high heat, great for fireplaces and BBQ

  • White Oak — smooth, steady burn; excellent for pizza ovens and overnight fires

  • Citrus — bright, fragrant, and great for smaller fires and ambiance

  • Avocado — rich, clean-burning profile with a warm, mild character

  • Eucalyptus — dense hardwood with high heat output; one of the hottest-burning woods we carry
