Why Firewood Guys Doesn't Export Firewood — And Why That Matters

At Firewood Guys, we keep firewood local. That's not a marketing line — it's a sourcing philosophy that shapes every delivery we make. We source from a mix of local places — the Santa Monica Mountains, Los Padres National Forest, local arborists, local ranches and farms, and homeowners throughout Southern California — deliver within the tri-county region, and never transport wood long distances between different ecosystems. Here's why that decision matters, and why you should ask the same question of any firewood supplier.

In this post:

Why Moving Firewood Long Distances Is a Problem

Firewood is not just wood. It carries everything that was living in and on that tree — including insects, larvae, fungi, mold spores, and pathogens. Many of these are harmless in the ecosystem where the tree grew. They become dangerous when transported into a new environment where local species have no natural defenses against them.

Emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly, sudden oak death — these are all examples of tree pests and diseases that have spread, in part, through the movement of firewood. Some have devastated entire forest regions that took generations to grow. The US Department of Agriculture, Cal Fire, and dozens of state forestry agencies all publish warnings about this exact risk.

You can't see most of what's traveling with firewood. The bark may look clean. The wood may smell fine. But the risk is real and the consequences, when they materialize, are severe.

The Buy It Where You Burn It Rule

"Buy it where you burn it" is the guidance promoted by forestry agencies, campsite managers, and national park services across the country. The idea is straightforward: firewood sourced close to its burn location carries far less risk than wood hauled across hundreds of miles of different ecosystems.

This rule also protects local tree species from threats they've never faced before. Southern California's oak forests — the same ones Kyle sources from — are part of a specific, evolved ecosystem. Introducing pests from the Central Valley, the High Desert, or other regions puts that ecosystem at risk.

Firewood Guys follows this principle fully. We don't ship firewood outside our delivery region, and we don't import wood from distant parts of California or other states.

What Local Sourcing Means at Firewood Guys

Kyle Campbell sources wood from a mix of local places — the Santa Monica Mountains, Los Padres National Forest, local arborists, local ranches and farms, and homeowners throughout Southern California. He has 25+ years of hands-on logging and wood processing experience across these specific areas. That expertise matters — he knows the terrain, the tree health, the access routes, and how to process timber from these hillsides correctly.

He also works with local arborists and tree companies to recycle usable wood from local tree removals. Trees that come down in Thousand Oaks, Ojai, or the Conejo Valley get turned into firewood for local customers — keeping that material in the community rather than sending it to landfill.

The result is firewood with a known and transparent origin. When you order from Firewood Guys, you know the wood came from the mountains that border your county — not from Tulare County, the Central Valley, or anywhere else hundreds of miles away.

Why This Matters for Ventura County Specifically

Ventura County sits at the edge of several distinct ecological zones. The Santa Monica Mountains, the Los Padres, the Channel Islands — each of these ecosystems is home to unique species that don't exist anywhere else. Sudden oak death, for example, has already affected coastal California oak populations. Introducing additional threats through poorly sourced firewood is a real risk that responsible sourcing avoids.

When you buy from a supplier who hauls wood from the Central Valley or other distant areas and calls it "California firewood," you have no way to know what came with it. Local sourcing eliminates that uncertainty entirely.
