How Much Firewood Do You Actually Need? A SoCal Buyer's Guide

This is the question almost every first-time firewood buyer asks: how much do I actually need? It sounds simple, but get it wrong and you're either rationing wood through January or staring at a pile that won't fit in your yard. If you're in Ventura, Los Angeles, or Santa Barbara County and heading into firewood season, this guide gives you a straight answer — based on how you actually use it. Text Kyle at 805-795-7111 or order at firewoodguysca.com when you're ready.

In this post:

Understanding Cord Sizes: What Are You Actually Buying?

Firewood is measured in cords. A full cord is a stack of wood measuring 4 feet high by 4 feet wide by 8 feet long — 128 cubic feet total. That's a lot of wood. For most Southern California households, it's more than enough to last an entire season.

Firewood Guys delivers in four sizes to match exactly what you need:

  • 1/8 cord — 16 cubic feet. Good for a few fires, a camping trip, or a quick top-up.

  • 1/4 cord — 32 cubic feet. Covers a month or two of occasional use.

  • 1/2 cord — 64 cubic feet. The most popular choice for SoCal households who fire up the fireplace regularly through the cooler months.

  • Full cord — 128 cubic feet. For heavy users, outdoor fire pits, pizza ovens, or anyone who wants to stock up for the full season and not think about it again.

How Much Do You Need? Match It to How You Burn

The honest answer depends on three things: how often you light fires, how long each fire burns, and what you're burning in. Here's a practical breakdown:

Occasional fireplace use (1–2 fires per week, October through February): A 1/4 to 1/2 cord is usually right. That's roughly 10–20 fires over the season at 5–7 pieces per fire.

Regular fireplace use (3–5 fires per week through the cool season): Plan on a 1/2 cord to a full cord. Once the weather drops in the Conejo Valley or the Ojai area, you'll burn through wood faster than you expect.

Outdoor fire pit (evenings on the patio, entertaining, year-round): Fire pits run through wood quickly since the heat escapes rather than warming a space. A 1/2 cord will go faster than you think. Order a full cord if you're hosting regularly.

Pizza oven or BBQ (weekend cooking, special events): Cooking fires are shorter but hotter. A 1/8 or 1/4 cord can stretch a long way if you're only firing up on weekends. If you're running the oven regularly, step up to a 1/2 cord.

Campsite or one-time event: A 1/8 cord covers most weekend camping scenarios. Kyle delivers to campsites at Lake Casitas, Emma Wood State Beach, Sycamore Canyon, and other Ventura County camping areas where delivery access is available.

Which Wood to Order for Your Use Case

Quantity matters, but so does what you're burning. All Firewood Guys wood is locally sourced — sourced from a mix of local places: the Santa Monica Mountains, Los Padres National Forest, local arborists, local ranches and farms, and homeowners throughout Southern California. No reselling, no out-of-state import. Here's what Kyle recommends by use case:

  • Fireplace heating: Red oak or white oak. Dense, long-burning, high heat. The go-to for cold Ventura County nights.

  • Pizza oven or BBQ cooking: Oak, avocado, or citrus. Clean-burning with great flavor profiles. Avocado is rich and aromatic; citrus brings a bright, slightly sweet character.

  • Outdoor fire pit or casual use: Hardwood/softwood mixed. Burns well, more economical for fires where you care more about ambiance than max heat output.

  • Camping or quick fires: Softwood mixed or camping blend. Lights faster, burns shorter — ideal when you want fire fast without hauling dense hardwood.

Order Firewood in Your County

Firewood Guys serves the tri-county area with pricing specific to each delivery zone. Shop your county directly:

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Order

Order before the cold arrives. Delivery slots fill up fast once the weather drops in October and November. Customers who wait until it's already cold often end up on a backorder list. Stock up in late August or September and you'll have your wood ready when you need it.

When in doubt, order more. Wood stores well for a full season when you keep it off the ground and covered on top. A half cord you don't finish this year burns just as well next fall. Running out mid-winter and waiting for a reorder slot is a worse problem.

Kyle measures honestly. Every order from Firewood Guys is the volume you paid for, stacked and measured by Kyle himself. No short loads, no guesswork.
