Why Ventura County Is One of SoCal's Best Camping Destinations

Ventura County packs an impressive range of outdoor terrain into a relatively small area. You can go from the Pacific Coast to high-elevation mountain camps in under two hours. The county's campsites draw hikers, beach campers, equestrians, and families — and most of them want a fire at night. The climate here is dry and warm, and evenings at elevation drop fast, making a proper campfire more than just ambiance — it's warmth, it's cooking, it's the center of the whole trip.

The problem most campers run into is firewood. State park campgrounds have their own camp hosts who sell firewood on-site — it's part of how the park system funds itself — so outside vendors aren't permitted to deliver inside park boundaries. The camp store wood is convenient, but it comes in small bundles at steep prices that burn fast and leave you rationing pieces. Firewood Guys is the option for campers in the surrounding areas and dispersed camping spots: we bring you a real quantity of locally sourced, seasoned hardwood or mixed wood, and we meet you just outside the park boundary so there's no hassle at the gate.

Campgrounds and State Parks We Deliver Near

We deliver firewood near all of the major campgrounds and recreation areas across Ventura County. These are the places we get the most requests from campers:

  • Lake Casitas Recreation Area — One of the county's most popular camping destinations for families and fishing. We meet customers near the entrance off Highway 150 outside Ojai.

  • Emma Wood State Beach — A coastal campground north of Ventura. We meet near the Ventura River Group Camp access point or along Highway 101 frontage.

  • McGrath State Beach — A dune and riparian campground between Ventura and Oxnard. Great spot for beach camping; we coordinate a meetup near the park entrance on Harbor Boulevard.

  • Point Mugu State Park — Remote coastal camping with stunning views. We meet at agreed points along Pacific Coast Highway south of Oxnard.

  • Leo Carrillo State Park — Just over the LA County line but we serve campers who stock up before arriving. Popular with surfers and coastal campers.

  • Wheeler Gorge Campground — A shaded Los Padres National Forest campground on Highway 33 north of Ojai. We meet near the Wheeler Gorge Visitor Center.

  • Rose Valley Campground — Tucked into the Upper Sespe near the Rose Valley Falls trailhead. We coordinate delivery at a meet point near the Highway 33 junction.

  • Chorro Grande — A dispersed backcountry site in the Sespe Wilderness. For campers driving in, we can meet near the trailhead on Forest Service roads.

  • Pine Mountain Campground — A high-elevation site off Pine Mountain Road in the Los Padres. We stage at the closest paved access point before your drive in.

  • Reyes Peak Campground — One of the highest campsites in the county with panoramic views. We meet at a designated point on Lockwood Valley Road.

  • Thorn Meadow — A primitive group site in the Sespe. We coordinate meetups near Pine Mountain Summit for backcountry users.

  • Piedra Blanca — A striking rock formation campsite in the Sespe Wilderness near Ojai. We meet off the Wheeler Gorge entry road.

  • Sespe Wilderness — For those venturing deep into one of California's designated Wilderness areas, we can stage wood at the nearest vehicle-accessible drop point.

  • Los Padres National Forest general sites — Many dispersed and developed campsites throughout the forest. Text Kyle the site name and he'll work out the nearest safe meetup point.

  • Lago Seco Park — A smaller county park and recreation area in the valley. We deliver to meet points near the entrance.

A quick note on how state parks work: California state park campgrounds have camp hosts on site who sell firewood to campers. Outside vendors are not permitted to deliver inside park boundaries — it protects the camp host's income and keeps the park system running. Firewood Guys respects that completely. What we offer is an option for campers in the areas surrounding state parks, and for dispersed camping spots in the national forest and wilderness areas where there's no camp store at all. We meet you outside the park boundary — a nearby parking area, a turnout on the highway, or just outside the entrance — and you carry the wood in from there. The wood itself comes from the same local mountains and forests that surround these parks: the Santa Monica Mountains, the Los Padres National Forest, and local ranches and arborists throughout the county. Same local quality, without the camp store markup.

How Firewood Guys Delivers to Campers — Meeting Outside the Gate

Here's how the delivery process works when you're camping:

  • Text or call Kyle at (805) 795-7111 before your trip — ideally 24–48 hours ahead.

  • Tell him which campground you're heading to and when you're arriving.

  • He'll confirm a nearby meetup point outside the park or campground boundary.

  • He delivers your wood to that spot, you load it up and head into camp.

  • Free delivery in most areas we service — some locations may have a small delivery fee shown at checkout.

Kyle handles every delivery himself. No third-party drivers, no dispatch confusion. You're texting the guy who splits and loads the wood personally. That means if you need to adjust timing or location day-of, it's one conversation.

Firewood Options for Your Campsite

Camping fires have different requirements than fireplace fires. You want wood that catches fast, burns with good heat, and doesn't choke out your tent with heavy smoke. Here's what we offer for campers:

  • Camping Firewood — Hardwood/Softwood Mixed (Ventura County): Starting at $94.50 — Our most popular pick for campers. A blend of hardwood and softwood that catches quickly and burns steadily through the night. Great for cooking and warmth. Shop Camping Firewood

  • Hardwood Only Mixed Firewood: Starting at $144.00 — For campers who want longer-lasting heat and lower smoke. Oak-forward with good coaling properties. Shop Hardwood Mixed

  • Red Oak or White Oak: Starting at $144.00 — The premium campfire choice. Slow-burning, high-heat hardwood for serious campers and campfire cooks. Shop Oak Firewood

  • Softwood Only Mixed: Starting at $94.50 — For campers who prefer fast-catching kindling-style fires or need to keep weight low. Burns hotter initially with less coal. Shop Softwood

All wood comes in four quantity sizes: 1/8 cord (16 cubic feet), 1/4 cord (32 cubic feet), 1/2 cord (64 cubic feet), and a full cord (128 cubic feet). For weekend camping, most groups find a 1/8 or 1/4 cord plenty. For a week-long trip or a large group site, step up to a 1/2 cord.

All firewood is locally sourced within 25 miles of the delivery location — from the Santa Monica Mountains, Los Padres National Forest, local arborists, ranches, and homeowners throughout the county. No mystery wood from out of state, no repackaged box-store bundles. Browse the full Ventura County shop

Tips for a Better Campfire in Southern California

A few things that make a big difference when you're burning wood outdoors in Southern California:

  • Use seasoned hardwood. Firewood Guys only sells properly seasoned wood — it lights faster, burns cleaner, and puts out more heat than green or wet wood. This matters especially for campfire cooking.

  • Bring more than you think you need. Campfire wood burns faster than fireplace wood because the draft is uncontrolled. A 1/8 cord that lasts a week at home might last a long weekend camping.

  • Build a fire ring if there isn't one. Established campgrounds will have designated fire rings. At dispersed sites in the Los Padres, clear a ring of soil and rock before building any fire.

  • Check fire conditions before you go. Ventura County and Los Padres fire restrictions change seasonally. Red Flag days and high-wind events can bring temporary bans on campfires even at established sites. Check with the campground or the USFS before your trip.

  • Keep a bucket of water at arm's reach. Not just for safety — it lets you control the fire's size when cooking and makes breaking down camp faster.

Order Firewood Before You Head Out

The best campfires start before you leave home. Text Kyle at (805) 795-7111 at least 24 hours before your trip and he'll line up a delivery — either to your door before you pack, or at a meet point near your campground. Don't rely on campground bundles that run out before dark.

Shop Ventura County firewood online and choose your quantity. Free delivery in most areas we service — some locations may have a small delivery fee shown at checkout. Text or call Kyle at (805) 795-7111 for campsite coordination.
